How did I got my first client

A story of mistakes, learning, and showing up.

Here is my experience dealing with an Indian Client NOTE: This blog is for those who don’t even know how to find clients and contact them.

The Framework (that worked for me)

Open Maps -> search [business] -> no website -> cold call.

See, Cold DMs work; networking and all these things work only on two things

  1. If you worked with past clients.
  2. You had strong work.

But at the very start of freelancing, you may not have both of these things.

The first thing you have to keep in mind is what type of business you need to target, as not every person/business will require an website/crm.

See, if you had watched any tutorial on this topic or asked AI bout this, they will tell you very generic niches like 1.Dentist 2.Plumber 3. Cleaning Services & generic niches

It is not necessary that your first client will be Dentist/Doctor in mycase I had contacted over 20+ healthcare/dentist in my area for a website, but none of them were interested.

You have to sit down and figure out what kind of people you are going to target and list them.

One thing I understood at that time was that understanding the market is the real thing

Then I found out that the booking and rental business can be a great niche to target because almost 90% of them had websites. So, I sat down and noted over 20 Contacts.

Journey to 1st Client

So, after noting down all the numbers, I started contacting them one by one, and the results were crazy/

All of them said no. I was kind of demotivated, but still I believed that this might have worked somehow. I changed my script, my way of talking, not to act as an sales person or scammer.

Then, the other day after another 10+ calls. Finally, one person said yes: “I AM INTERESTED ”

That a moment for me because after trying and facing rejections from over 30+ people. I finally landed one

Then I visited his office, understood what he wanted and how it should be delivered.

It was basically a 6k project that I built in 2days (AI, of course).

The Script

This is the script that I used for cold calling

Hey there Good Morning/evening/afternoon, Am I talking to [owner/business name]? Hey sir, I was looking for taxi cab services in Vadodara, and I found out your Google business profile,

But Sir, I can’t see the prices and the cars that are available. Have you thought of building a website that will showcase all your services, where the customer can see and book a cab with WhatsApp integration? And if he says yes, then now it’s your skill to convert it.

Highlight their pain point that where there were lacking and how you can help them.

[problem] + [your solution] = high% getting lead.

Remember

Just don’t overcomplicate things I will build an AI taxi booking where the user will auto-select and all this bullshit. Keep it simple. If he shows interest, then tell him what you can build top of a simple website.

Mistake I did

As this is my first time and I am also a little bit inexperienced

  1. The first version of the website I made is modern and clean, which the client didn’t like because he likes the high-contrast website like the early 2000's.
  2. I didn’t take an advance payment, not even 20%, 30%, or 50%.

Learning that you can implement

  1. Always ask for the client's taste in a website, meaning what kind of theme he just wants: early 2000s or modern, clean, or whatever he wants.
  2. Always take some amount of payment because this will make both the client and you serious.

Take your time and find out what works well for you because the thing that worked for me doesn't need to work for you. Just f*ck around and find out.
